Tile Mosaic on Catholic Church in Las Vegas

Region:
Tags:

This is a beautiful mosaic found on a church in Las Vegas. The work is exquisite and the colors are great. It's too bad the mosaic isn't interesting enough to save what is not the most attractive building.

Gasthof Forsthaus

Region:

This beautiful example of luftlmalerei is visible on the right side of the road when driving to Garmisch-Partenkirchen from Munich.

Kreis Sparkasse Partenkirchen

Region:

This bank near the train station has great examples of both geometric shapes and natural scenes. The painting includes the Sparkasse logo as well as workers building a wall, presumably to make the connection between the bank's loans and the construction in the image.

Below the painting is the expression:

Arbeiten und Sparen - Goldene Frucht in Späten Jahren
Working and Saving - Golden Fruit in (Your) Later Years
or
To Work and To Save - Golden Fruit in (Your) Later Years

St. Irmengard Schule

Region:

The inscription is hard to read. This is the best that I can do:
Irmengardis
Lud Regis Caff
Filia 1 Abba
fissa

I think that the third line means "daughter of the 1st Abba", but whether Abba was a name or a position, I don't know.

Autovermietung Toni Biersack Junior

Region:

This very unique example of Luftlmalerei in Garmisch is found on what I assume is a private residence behind an Avis auto rental in Garmisch. It has a much more modern feel and uses the entire width of the house to display the full mountain scene. The mountains painted are the mountains above Garmisch, partially visible behind the house. Rather than the typical farm or work scenes with people wearing Trachtel, there is a relatively modern hockey player seated in the image, with his legs dangling outside the frame.

Every business should display their work this openly, and be this proud!

Schuhhof

Region:

This shoe store in Partenkirchen has very interesting imagery. God and Jesus sit on clouds surrounded by angels as a soldier delivers a sealed letter in the opposite corner. The main part of the scene appears to have people cutting down pine trees and making rafts, possibly for the transportation of the timber.

Very interestingly, god had a triangular halo. This may be masonic symbolism.

Intricate Door of Scrap Wood in Portland

Type:
Region:

This is probably my all time favorite piece of work that I have run across without looking for. The door looks very solidly built, but is made up of just scraps of wood. The longer you look, the more details you see, and the more you realize that this was a serious labor of love. The faces and the way the pieces come together make it clear that not only an incredible amount of time went into this, but how the individual scraps probably spoke to the builder and built themselves, rather than the builder looking for scraps to fit an idea.

Roof of Undulating Waves of Wooden Shingles

Type:
Region:

I can't imagine what it cost to build this roof. It's whimsical, but I question whether the cost and trouble are worth it, when the final roof is probably less waterproof with a shorter lifespan than an asphalt shingle roof.

In Denver's Washington Park neighborhood.
